Obamamania

It appears that the Barak Obama Tsunami of Great Expectations has overwhelmed the Granite State and the national media’s general sense of perspective. The press coverage of the Illinois Junior Senator’s visit to New Hampshire has been positively fawning. NPR, the Washington Post, the AP, New York Times, et al were falling all over themselves this weekend, praising his style and genuflecting at the alter of his still unannounced candidacy. It almost feels like the press wants to coronate Obama as the Anti-Hillary for 2008. And while I am no fan HRC in ’08, this state of affairs makes me very uncomfortable. The guy may be the Democratic rock star of the moment but the hype surrounding him is just insane.

Yes, Obama is articulate, good on most issues, and has a near prefect back story. But he has only held statewide office for two years, is still a very green pol, and has no foreign policy experience. The last time we elected someone with a resume that thin, we got George W. Bush.

So please, let’s not get carried away with this yet.

Obama's "Barack Star" treatment will fade, leaving still a bigger problem facing this country. That's why I'm asking bloggers everywhere – especially those in states like Iowa and New Hampshire – to help me spread the word about the Warning Labels On Politicians™ campaign. Why warning labels? Because I believe the only thing more dangerous than a candidate on the campaign trail is a politician in office. In a recent news release (see below), I provided details to members of the media. If you want to help push this effort forward, please help me distribute this news release. Thanks in advance!

Warning Labels On Politicians™ Campaign Launched

(ST. LOUIS) – Robert “Bob” McCarty believes few things in life can be as dangerous as a politician with power. Believing his message will resonate with Americans as the 2008 elections draw near, he launched the Warning Labels On Politicians™ campaign.

“Warning labels already appear on drugs, cigarettes, pesticides and other items that can negatively impact a person’s health and well-being,” McCarty explained. “So why not require similar warnings on members of society who have proven themselves as dangerous – or more dangerous – than many items that already carry such labels – politicians!”

Through his Warning Labels On Politicians™ effort, the St. Louis-area resident is calling on politicians from across the political spectrum to be “transparent” with voters and agree to display warning labels on all literature, signage and advertising related to their campaigns. First on his list are two U.S. senators, Hillary Clinton of New York and John McCain of Arizona.

“I’m calling on Senators Clinton and McCain to serve as examples for politicians at all levels of government,” he said, citing their status as their party frontrunners for the White House in 2008. “If they want to be viewed as honest, upfront and transparent, they’ll agree to place warning labels on all materials related to their campaigns.”

Each label includes a side-effects warning: “…may include diarrhea, headache, irregular heartbeat, multiple organ failure, nausea, shortness of breath and, yes, in some cases, death.”

To date, McCarty has prepared warning labels for Clinton, McCain and a number of other politicians expected to launch 2008 White House bids. The list of “labeled” politicians thusfar includes Democrats John Edwards, John Kerry, Barack Obama and Tom Vilsack as well as three other Republicans Newt Gingrich, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney.

Others, though not expected to run for the White House, also earned warning label recognition. They are Nancy Pelosi, the first female ever elected to serve as Speaker of the House, and Sen. Harry Reid, who will begin serving as Senate majority leader in January.

As additional candidates surface on the national stage, more warning labels will be created, McCarty said, noting that some non-presidential politicians could rate warning-label status.

He also pointed out that Warning Labels On Politicians™ is not affiliated with any nonprofit organization or political action committee.
