The Giuliani Problem

I look at the current crop of Presidential candidates and I don’t see much to excite me. On the Democratic side, Hillary is probably the leader right now and if you read here often, you know I have no love for her. She is too divisive and after about 3 minutes, her voice starts to grate on me like fingernails on a chalk board. Not what I want in a frontrunner.

Next is Obama, for whom I will withhold judgment until I get a better sense of the man and his politics. I just don’t know enough about him yet. But taking into account the extraordinary numbers he pulled in first quarter fundraising, Barak Obama may be the superstar that everyone talking him up to be – we will see.

Edwards is another tough one. I love his style and his politics. By all appearances, he is a genuinely nice guy. But is he ready to be President? I haven’t figured it out yet but there something about him (shrugs) – I don’t know. Could he be worse than we have now? Not by a long shot but I am not sold on him.

The guy I think may have the best resume is Bill Richardson but his campaign does not seem to be going anywhere. Maybe ha can get some traction but his anemic fundraising does not bode well for the long term. If he has any chance, he needs to make a splash sooner rather than later.

Biden (God no), Kucinich (hhhhhhaaaaaahhhhhaaaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaaa), and the rest aren’t even going to get off the ground. And for the record, I no longer believe that Gore (my preferred choice) is going to run. I would be the first to jump on the bandwagon but whatever. So all in all, the field is not great, not terrible, and it is a helluva lot better than what the Republicans are looking at. Oy.

First off, everyone not named McCain, Romney, or Giuliani has no chance. Newt isn’t officially in it yet and he is kidding himself if he thinks he can win – too many adulterous affairs for someone so self-righteous. Not to mention, he is a hypocritical nut. Those ghetto comments he made are not going to help either.

Fred Thompson is rumored to be thinking of getting in on the fun. If he runs, he would probably make for a good candidate but it may already be too late for him to be effective. Duncan Hunter is a lunatic that no one has heard of; same goes double for Sam Brownback.

Then there is John McCain. What a mess his campaign has become. He looks tired already. His support for the war is hurting him badly and his fundraising is not where it needs to be. The press has been killing him over his contrived visit to Baghdad. I see the wheels coming off the Straight Talk Express.

Mitt Romney is the current money leader. He is also a Mormon from Massachusetts who has earned the nickname Multiple Choice Mitt for his ability to flip-flop on the social issues. A good many of the people that vote in Southern Republican primaries are not going to vote for a Northern Mormon who waffles on gay rights. Sorry folks, not gonna happen. And without the South, he cannot win.

Finally, there is Rudy. One would think that a socially liberal Catholic former Mayor of NYC would not stand a chance. Add to that, Giuliani is on his third marriage, has had some pretty shady dealings with corrupt jerkoff Bernard Kerik, doesn’t hate gays, and once vamped it on camera in drag. On paper, Rudy should be polling somewhere in the negative teens. The fact that he is beating everyone else is simply bizarre. I can’t say exactly why he doing so well but I think his law and order tough guy persona is trumping all of his flaws as a candidate – for now anyway. And that is why his candidacy is a problem. None of those detractors seem to matter when it comes to America’s Mayor. Given his stance on the social issues, a good many Dems might even cross over to vote for him. That makes Giuliani a pretty formidable candidate right now. Hell, if I had to pick a Republican to be the next President, he would be my first choice by a WIDE margin.

Like everything else, time will tell if Rudy can maintain his momentum but today, IMHO, he is the Republican with the best shot of winning the General election.

Some Conservatives are starting to stink to high Heaven particularly those who consider themselves "True" Conservatives yet would still vote for someone who is for gay unions at the very least and has come out recently and said that he would USE PUBLIC TAX MONEY to pay for abortions (CNN 4/2/07). It's funny also that the media focused on Romney's MINOR blurb about hunting and not paying attention to what Rudy said. Who do you think that the MSM is more scared of? To have every news outlet that the Liberal MSM has ever created to make a stink about hunting (NOT 2ND AMMENDMENT RIGHTS WHICH ROMNEY IS FIRMLY FOR) as opposed to something even more important about abortions and making it a public (you and me) responsibility? More on this in a minute.

You "Conservatives" need to wake up. I don't care if Rudy is "at least" being up front about his positions. They are the wrong positions. If he isn't going to change his views and side on Conservative priciples AT THE LEAST then he's not worth it.

Now people are starting to harp on an actor who was once a Senator for a short time. Just because he saved the day on TV, it's still TV and not the real world. Do you think that Hollywood would be any different in dealing with Fred Thompson as Mitt Romney in Massachusetts? Hollywood has made their pick and conservatives are ready to jump ship on a guy who's proven himself and moved in the Conservative direction for a "non-executive" actor? You people are beginning to make me sick from your smell.

The last part about some of you "conservatives" is that if you don't like Mitt Romney it's not really about him, it's about his religion and you know it. If it weren't then you wouldn't have to keep explaining that you "don't have a problem with mormonism."

Now back to the MSM and what they know about "conservatives" right now when it comes to Mitt Romney. They know that you - ALL OF YOU - Conservatives are having problems. Your off-balance and there are so many variables to it. They know that you have a religion problem, an issues problem on getting on the same page, a whose electable problem, and a morals and values problem. They are playing you like fiddles and you're eating it up. They're putting stories out there knowing that you'll eat your own at their hands.

Mitt Romney says something about being a life long hunter and Mike "Hack"abee goes out on NATIONAL TV (CBS LIBERAL MSM CENTRAL) and has a problem with Romney talking about hunting yet says that Rudy's at least "honest" about his abortion stance and public funding of them. I don't care what "Hack"abee said about opposing that stance. He still feels that Rudy's a better person to be the Republican party nominee than someone whose made the change in my (a True Conservatives) position.

I'm tired of the bigot riddled Liberal MSM comments about religion when it comes to Romney and I'm even more tired of bigoted "True" Conservatives eating their "BS" up and regurgitating it back to us giving them credibility and eating away at people who's backgrounds both personal and professional truly serves our needs as Americans.

I'm tired of it and any conservative who is a true conservative truly believes in AMERICA and the traditional values that this country was built on should go out and fight against this.

Wow. For starters, I am a dyed in the wool liberal. If you had bothered to read the site a bit more, that fact would have been obvious. That said, I have no dog in the fight for the Republican nomination so this “you conservative” business does not apply to me. I was just making an observation of what I see going on with the viable campaigns. Second, as a good liberal, I believe that Romney’s Mormonism is completely irrelevant to his fitness for the office. I could care less what his religion is. My point is that a good many of the conservatives out there do care. If fact, many conservative primary voters will view Romney as a heretic. Do I think that is right? No. But I do think it is the truth. I wish I were wrong about that but there you go.

Romney’s hunting problem is getting play because the guy lied – period. That is a more interesting story. It has nothing to do with media bias against his religion. That is just a convenient excuse conservatives use whenever the news does not favor them. Grow up and quick blaming the refs. Romney fucked up and is paying the price for it. Huckabee is simply trying to capitalize on that. This is hardball politics sport – get used to it.

New Orleans here:

First, to afu- learn how to use 'who's' and 'whose' and 'your' and 'you're' correctly if you want to be taken seriously here or anywhere. It's not that hard to pay attention in 9th grade English.

Second, as JoeStrummer said, pay attention to the site...he's a liberal. This 'you Conservative' BS is just that.

Third, tax dollars can already be used to pay for abortions- see my student insurance policy from Tulane University and the Federal Stafford Loans that were used to pay for it. However, you would deny a poor mother of three from the St. Bernard Housing Project in New Orleans (currently condemned) access to these funds. How is this equal treatment under the law?

Fourth, I am (so far) unimpressed by any of the candidates on either side. I agree that Bill Richardson has the best resume, but, several years ago he pissed me off by saying on national TV that he was voting his conscience and not how his constituents wanted him to vote. Now, I may be an idealist, but that was his f'ing job as part of the representative government we have- to vote as his constituents wanted him to vote. Frankly, I'm interested to see what the Unity Ticket comes up with. Dem and GOP on the same ticket-could make for some interesting politics. Just my two cents' worth.
