Romney for Veep?

The Politico says that Mitt Romney is the leading contender to be McCain’s VP, mostly for his fundraising prowess. I, for one, hope he gets it because aside from Rudy Giuliani, Romney is the most mockable GOP contestant in the running. Between his ever-fungible policy positions, the Stepfordesque image, and that hair helmet, believe me, the strongest supporters of a Romney Vice Presidential run are the writers at Comedy Central.

The tip-off that Politico is just a “promote Romney” piece is that it mentions EVERY NAME in the next two tiers of Veep prospects EXCEPT SARAH PALIN!!! — even names far more unlikely than Palin (since Romney camp knows Palin is the ONLY ONE who tops — I’ll say tops by far — Romney as McCain’s best pick).

Bottom line, Romney and Politico fear Palin most — as do the Dems and the MSM. (By the way, the Dems and MSM do not fear Romney the most — which says a lot.)

I will grant you that Palin would be a solid choice but I don’t think she can be considered the top pick for a few reasons.
1. She is from Alaska which has few electoral votes and even those are pretty reliably Republican (even in this cycle). Furthermore, GOP lawmakers in Alaska have been holding a “how to” clinic on public corruption of late. Palin may be clean as a whistle and guilt by association may be unfair but there is a certain taint to the Republican Party up there right now.
2. Outside of the Great Frozen North, no one has heard of her.
3. She has very little experience.
4. If McCain is going to run as “a different kind of Republican”, choosing a Bush policy clone is a skirt sort of undercuts that message.
My two cents…
